what we offer
Medico Legal Services
Our Occupational Therapists are qualified in the use of, interpretation and analysis of a variety of test batteries and assessment tools. In addition to the standard cognitive, physical, functional, communication, motor skills and dexterity assessment tools, most of our OT’s are certified Workwell practitioners.
Before conducting the standard Occupational Therapy assessments, we delve deep into the claimant’s background, pre-existing health status, living conditions and circumstances. This often involves visiting the claimant’s home, school, and workplace where applicable. We believe this is an important element in formulating a final expert opinion and it has considerable impact on a number of other very crucial factors.
Having undertaken all the necessary assessments, we compile a comprehensive medico legal report detailing the client’s capabilities and barriers. We are able to make concrete recommendations on the claimant’s holistic management going forward, which includes therapy and rehabilitation, accessibility recommendations, assistive devices and equipment required, personal care, and general lifelong care needs for the claimant. Our reports provide recommendations on post-accident vocational potential inclusive of possible early retirement which allows the industrial psychologist to conclude objectively on loss of earnings.
Our reports are widely lauded for their relevance and objectivity. Our core driving principles are underpinned by the professional principles as enshrined in our professional affiliation with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
The central ethos of occupational therapy is to optimize a person’s functionality in order to cope with their disability or related condition so that they can be as independent and as effective as possible in their daily lives. To give effect to this, AGP offers rehabilitation interventions in the physical, cognitive and functional domains for both adults and children.
In addition, we offer case management and life care planning services to ensure that recommendations for optimal management of a client are followed through.
Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)
Functional capacity evaluation (FCE) comprises of formal testing to determine the ability of the evaluated person to function in a variety of circumstances, most often for employment purposes.
Our FCE processes compare the individual’s health status and body functions with the structure and the demands of the job and the work environment.
The FCE may be used to determine:
- Goals for rehabilitation or readiness for medical boarding
- Ability to safely return to work (including full duty or light duty)
- Work ability status for vocational rehabilitation
- Advise on Workers’ compensation case settlement
- Disability status
- Ability to meet job demands as part of the recruitment and selection process
Return to Work Programmes
We help individuals with illness and/or injury resume work duties on a gradual basis through transitional work using the actual work tasks and environments as part of rehabilitation. Our Occupational Therapists work with the employer to identify environmental and task modifications that will support work performance.
Work performance is closely monitored and discussed among the occupational therapist, employer, and individual. As tolerance increases, work tasks are advanced to match the individual’s abilities until maximum recovery is achieved.
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)
VR is geared toward facilitating participation in work and fulfilment of the worker role, helps with job training, employment accommodation and job placement.
AGP services related to vocational rehabilitation include:
- Comprehensive evaluation to determine abilities, skills, and interests for employment;
- Develop rehabilitation planning programme;
- Optimise function in work related aspects;
- Facilitate the safe and timely return to work following injury or illness;
- Vocational counselling;
- Recommendations regarding assistive devices, ergonomic restructuring and reasonable accommodations;
- Supportive rehabilitation services including case management, counselling, and medical referrals.
Medical Boarding on Grounds of Disability
Disability arises from a person’s altered capacity to meet personal, social or occupational demands because of an impairment. Where an employee is likely to suffer permanent incapacity and subsequent medical boarding, all alternatives short of dismissal have to be explored.
Such includes alternative employment, or adapting the duties or work circumstances of the employee to accommodate the circumstances of the employee. Incapacity resulting in medical boarding is a very sensitive matter and it needs to be treated with great care, expertise and proper assessment.
